The Field Guide
Everything about getting licensed in New Jersey.
Short, sourced guides written for people in the middle of it: in a course, booked for the exam, retaking, or just licensed. Every guide is checked against PSI and NJ Real Estate Commission sources.
Start where you are
The NJ real estate license one-year rule: your deadline, explained
You have one year from finishing the 75-hour course to pass the PSI exam and file a complete license application. What counts and how to plan it.
Read the guideThe short version
- Your deadline is one year from the day you complete the 75-hour prelicensing course. It is printed on your passing score report as the eligibility expiration date.
- Before that date you have to pass the PSI exam, get fingerprinted and have a complete license application filed through a sponsoring broker. Passing the exam does not restart the clock.
- Miss it and you start over: the course, the exam and the application. Plan backward from the date, and leave room for a retake.
