Do new NJ real estate licensees need CE for the 2027 renewal?
Licensed on or after July 1, 2026? You likely need no CE for the June 30, 2027 renewal. Licensed earlier? You need 12 hours by April 30, 2027.
Rules covered through . Sources and corrections.
The short version
- 1It depends on your license issue date: the current New Jersey term runs July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2027, and a salesperson first licensed in the second year of that term (July 1, 2026 or later) does not need any CE to renew on June 30, 2027.
- 2A salesperson first licensed in the first year (July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026) needs all 12 hours, including 6 core hours with 2 in ethics, 1 in fair housing and the Law Against Discrimination and 1 in agency.
- 3Either way you still renew your license by June 30, 2027, and if you owe CE, finish it by April 30, 2027 or pay a $200 late CE processing fee.
The short answer for new licensees
New Jersey real estate licenses run on two-year terms. The current one started July 1, 2025 and ends June 30, 2027, when every salesperson license has to be renewed. Whether you owe continuing education (CE) for that renewal comes down to one thing: which year of the term your salesperson license was first issued in.
| Your first salesperson license was issued | CE for the June 30, 2027 renewal | Still have to renew by June 30, 2027? |
|---|---|---|
| July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026 (first year) | Yes: all 12 hours, due by April 30, 2027 to avoid the $200 late fee | Yes |
| July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027 (second year) | None required this term | Yes |
If you passed the PSI exam recently and your license was approved this fall, you are almost certainly in the second group. If you are still waiting on approval, see what to do after you pass; the date your license is issued is the one that counts, not the date you passed.
What the rule actually says
The exemption is written into the Real Estate Commission's rules at N.J.A.C. 11:5-12.3(a)(3). Here is the paragraph in full: "A person who is initially licensed as a salesperson in the second year of a biennial license term shall not be required to fulfill any continuing education requirements in order to renew the salesperson's license upon the conclusion of that license term. A person who is initially licensed as a salesperson during the first year of a biennial license term shall complete all applicable continuing education requirements in order to renew the salesperson's license upon the conclusion of that license term."
The Commission's current CE page applies it to this term in almost the same words: salespersons initially licensed in the second year "shall not be required to fulfill any continuing education to renew their license upon the conclusion of that license term," while those licensed in the first year "ARE REQUIRED to complete CE requirements in order to renew their license" by the June 30, 2027 deadline.
Two limits on the exemption are worth knowing. It only waives CE for the renewal at the end of the term you were first licensed in; from the next term on, you need the full requirement like everyone else, and for terms starting July 1, 2027 that is 18 hours under P.L. 2026, c.52, not 12. And the rule's wording covers people "initially licensed as a salesperson." If you held a New Jersey salesperson or referral license before, or you are coming back from an expired license, it may not fit you; see the sections below and call the Commission at 609-292-7272 if you are unsure.
Quick check
Saves to your topic scoreA salesperson's first New Jersey license is issued on September 15, 2026, during the license term that ends June 30, 2027. What continuing education must she complete to renew at the end of that term?
Reveal answer (review only)
Answer: The answer is C, None, because she was initially licensed in the second year of the term.
Under N.J.A.C. 11:5-12.3(a)(3), a person initially licensed as a salesperson in the second year of a biennial term does not have to complete any CE to renew at the end of that term. She still has to renew by June 30, 2027.
Why the other answers do not fit
- A. 12 hours, including 6 core hours, by April 30, 2027
- That is the requirement for salespersons first licensed in the first year of the term, July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026.
- B. 6 hours, half of the usual requirement
- New Jersey does not prorate CE hours; the rule is all or nothing based on the year of the term.
- D. Only the 2 hours of ethics required of every licensee
- The exemption covers all CE for that renewal, ethics included.
Remember: Licensed in year two of the term: no CE for that first renewal, but you still renew.

If you were licensed in the first year of the term
If your salesperson license was issued between July 1, 2025 and June 30, 2026, you need the full requirement for this renewal. The Commission's breakdown of required hours is:
| Hours | Topic |
|---|---|
| 2 | Ethics |
| 1 | Fair housing and the NJ Law Against Discrimination |
| 1 | Agency |
| 2 | Any core topic |
| 6 | Any combination of core and elective topics |
| 12 | Total |
Core topics include agency, disclosure, legal issues such as listing agreements, contracts, leases and attorney review, ethics, fair housing and the LAD, New Jersey license law and rules, environmental laws, escrow and recordkeeping, licensee safety, and financial literacy. Electives include commercial real estate, property management, seasonal rentals, financing, land use and valuation, among others. The agency hour comes from the 2024 law change described in the Commission's Bulletin 24-11, and the rule changes post covers the rest of what changed.
- Take courses only from Commission-approved providers. Approved providers and courses are listed in PSI's New Jersey CE system at njrece.psiexams.com.
- You cannot get credit for the same course twice in one term, and extra credits do not roll over to the next term.
- Providers report your hours to PSI. The Commission says it takes about 10 business days for completed CE to move from the provider to PSI to the Commission, so check your record there and keep your completion certificates.
Here is a worked example. Dana's salesperson license was issued on March 10, 2026, in the first year of the term. She needs all 12 hours, with the core mix above, and has until April 30, 2027 to finish them without a late fee. Her classmate Marcus finished the same course but did not pass the exam until July, and his license was issued on August 18, 2026. He needs no CE for the June 30, 2027 renewal. Same class, different issue dates, different answers.
Quick check
Saves to your topic scoreA salesperson licensed in the first year of the term finishes her 12 CE hours on May 20, 2027 and renews on June 10, 2027. What is the result?
Reveal answer (review only)
Answer: The answer is A, She renews, but must pay a $200 late CE processing fee.
N.J.A.C. 11:5-12.3(b) charges a $200 processing fee to licensees who complete CE between May 1 and June 30 of the second year of the term. April 30 is the deadline to avoid the fee, not the deadline to renew.
Why the other answers do not fit
- B. Her license expires because she missed the April 30 deadline
- Missing April 30 triggers the fee, not expiration. The license expires only if it is not renewed by June 30.
- C. She renews with no extra fee because she renewed before June 30
- Renewing on time does not cancel the fee; it is based on when CE was completed.
- D. She must request a hardship waiver before she can renew
- Waivers cover illness, military duty or unavoidable hardship. Finishing late is not a ground, and she can simply pay the fee.
Remember: April 30 avoids the $200 fee. June 30 keeps your license alive.

April 30 vs June 30: two different deadlines
These two dates trip people up because they do different jobs.
| Date | What it is | What happens if you miss it |
|---|---|---|
| April 30, 2027 | CE completion deadline to avoid the extra fee | You can still finish CE and renew, but you pay a $200 late CE processing fee |
| June 30, 2027 | License renewal deadline and end of the term | Your license expires; you cannot work until it is reinstated |
The fee is in the rule itself. N.J.A.C. 11:5-12.3(b) says licensees who finish their CE between May 1 and June 30 of the second year, or during the late renewal period, "shall pay a processing fee of $ 200.00," and those who finish "on or before April 30 of the second year of a biennial license term shall not be required to pay this processing fee." The Commission's CE FAQ adds that there are no time extensions to complete CE during a renewal cycle.
If you are exempt, the April 30 date does not apply to you this term, but June 30 does. When you renew, the rule says you certify to the Commission, directly or through your broker, that you met the CE requirement, were exempt, or hold a waiver. The Commission's licensing FAQ says renewal notices go to your employing broker's office, so stay in touch with your broker as spring approaches. The salesperson renewal fee is $100; the cost breakdown lists the other licensing fees.
What happens if you miss a deadline
Miss April 30 and you pay $200 extra, but you can still renew on time if you finish your hours and renew by June 30. Miss June 30 and the consequences get bigger. The Commission's CE FAQ is blunt: if you have not finished CE by the expiration date, "You will not be able to renew and your license will expire." You then have to complete the CE, go through reinstatement and pay the fees.
For reinstatement, the Commission's page says broker, broker-salesperson and salesperson applicants "must complete the CE credits applicable in the preceding license term" before applying, and its licensing FAQ says the application has to be completed by a currently licensed employing broker. The reinstatement fee for a salesperson is $150. Its licensing FAQ also says a license can be inactive for 2 years after the expiration date of the last license issued.
Waivers exist but are narrow. Under N.J.A.C. 11:5-12.5, the Commission may waive CE in whole or in part for incapacitating illness, active military duty of one year or more during the term, an emergency, or other substantial and unavoidable hardship. Financial hardship, unreasonable delay and business or personal conflicts do not qualify. Requests are due by March 15 of the second year of the term (March 15, 2027 this term), except emergency requests, which must be filed within a reasonable time. Waived core hours have to be made up next term on top of the regular 12, except for military waivers.
Planning ahead for the 2029 renewal
If you are exempt this term, your first CE requirement comes with the next one. Applying the rule's two-year cycle, that term runs July 1, 2027 to June 30, 2029, so the no-fee CE deadline would be April 30, 2029 and renewal June 30, 2029. The Commission has not posted those dates yet; check its CE page when the term starts. That term also falls under P.L. 2026, c.52, which raises the requirement to 18 hours for salespersons, with at least 10 in set topics and at least 2 taken in person or by live webinar. Our renewal and CE guide has the details.
Our suggestion: do not save all 18 hours for the spring of 2029. Courses taken before the new term starts on July 1, 2027 will not count toward it, but once it starts, spreading a few hours across each season keeps you clear of the April rush and the roughly 10-business-day reporting lag.
Brokers, referral agents and returning licensees
- Broker-salespersons and brokers: the second-year exemption in 11:5-12.3(a)(3) names salespersons only. Separately, the rule says completing broker prelicensure education fulfills the CE requirement for the term in which you finished the course.
- Referral agents: the Commission's CE page says salespersons licensed with a referral company are exempt from CE. Its FAQ adds that you must complete CE to change to a salesperson, broker-salesperson or broker license. For terms starting July 1, 2027, P.L. 2026, c.52 requires referral agents to take 2 hours.
- Licensees coming back after an expiration: reinstatement requires the CE from the term before, so the new-licensee exemption is not a way around it.
- Out-of-state licensees who got an NJ license through the education waiver: you are still a first-time New Jersey salesperson, so your NJ issue date decides which year of the term you fall in. If anything about your file is unusual, confirm with the Commission.
For how these rules show up on the state portion of the exam, see licensing and the Commission.
Quick check
Saves to your topic scoreWhich set of courses meets a New Jersey salesperson's 12-hour CE requirement for the term?
Reveal answer (review only)
Answer: The answer is D, 2 ethics, 1 fair housing and LAD, 1 agency, 2 other core and 6 elective hours.
The Commission requires 12 hours with at least 6 core: 2 ethics, 1 fair housing and NJ Law Against Discrimination, 1 agency and 2 more in any core topic. The other 6 can be any mix of core and elective. This is the 2025 to 2027 rule; terms starting July 1, 2027 require 18 hours under P.L. 2026, c.52.
Why the other answers do not fit
- A. 12 hours of elective courses such as financing and property management
- At least 6 of the 12 hours must be core topics.
- B. 2 hours of ethics plus 10 hours of any core or elective topics
- Ethics alone is not enough; fair housing and LAD, agency and 2 more core hours are also required.
- C. 6 hours of core including 2 of ethics and 1 of agency, plus 6 elective hours
- This set is missing the required hour of fair housing and the NJ Law Against Discrimination.
Remember: 12 total, 6 core: 2 ethics, 1 fair housing, 1 agency, 2 any core.

FAQ
Do new NJ real estate licensees need CE for the 2027 renewal?
Not if your salesperson license was first issued in the second year of the term, which starts July 1, 2026. If it was issued between July 1, 2025 and June 30, 2026, you need all 12 hours.
How many CE hours do NJ real estate salespersons need?
Twelve hours for the 2025 to 2027 term. At least 6 must be core topics, including 2 in ethics, 1 in fair housing and the Law Against Discrimination and 1 in agency. Terms starting July 1, 2027 require 18 hours under P.L. 2026, c.52.
What is the NJ real estate CE deadline for 2027?
April 30, 2027. Finishing after that but by the renewal deadline lets you renew, but you pay a $200 late CE processing fee.
When do NJ real estate licenses expire?
The current term ends June 30, 2027. Every license must be renewed by then or it expires.
If I am exempt from CE, do I still have to renew?
Yes. The exemption only removes the CE requirement for this term. You still renew by June 30, 2027 and certify that you were exempt.
Does my 75-hour salesperson course count as CE?
The Commission's CE rule and pages give that treatment only to broker prelicensure courses. Nothing we found says the 75-hour salesperson course counts as CE.
Can I carry extra CE hours into the next term?
No. The Commission's FAQ says CE credits do not roll over to the next licensing term, and you cannot get credit for the same course twice in one term.
How do I check my NJ real estate CE hours?
Log in to PSI's New Jersey CE system at njrece.psiexams.com. Providers report your hours, and the Commission says it takes about 10 business days for completed CE to move from the provider to PSI to the Commission.
