The short version
- 1After you pass the PSI exam, the Real Estate Commission wants you fingerprinted right away through IDEMIA's IdentoGO Live Scan service, for an FBI criminal history check.
- 2Fill in the salesperson Universal Form (IDG_NJAPP_051719_V1) first, book online at uenroll.identogo.com or by phone at 1-877-503-5981, and pay IDEMIA $66.05 when you book; appointments usually come 7 to 10 days out.
- 3Bring the form and one government photo ID showing your name, address and date of birth, then keep the form copy and IDEMIA receipt, because your application is not accepted without that proof.
When to get fingerprinted
Right after you pass. The Commission's fingerprinting page says the Department suggests you schedule the fingerprint scan immediately after you pass the exam. It does not ask you to wait for a broker or for anything else first.
The reason is your deadline. You have one year from completing your 75-hour course, not from passing, to file a complete license application, and the Commission will not accept an application without proof of fingerprinting. Appointments are usually available 7 to 10 days after you schedule, so every week you wait to book is a week off the end of your window. If you are not sure how much time you have, read the one-year rule explained.
What the fingerprints are for
New Jersey requires license applicants to submit fingerprints and written consent for a criminal history record check. The prints go through the State Police coordinated Live Scan system, run by the state's vendor IDEMIA under the IdentoGO name, and are checked against FBI records. The Universal Form lists the statute behind it, N.J.S.A. 45:15-9, and the reason as real estate sales, brokers and salespersons.
The Commission's licensing requirements page says it must be satisfied as to your honesty, trustworthiness, character and integrity, and that an application may be denied if you have been convicted of a crime or are on parole or probation. A past record is not an automatic bar under that wording, but if you have one, call the Commission at 609-292-7272 before you file rather than after. For the wider licensing rules, see licensing and the Commission.
Step 1: Fill in the Universal Form
You have to complete the form before you book. The Commission posts three versions; salesperson, broker-salesperson, broker and referral candidates all use the same one, the Universal Form for salespersons and brokers. Its form number is IDG_NJAPP_051719_V1, and the Commission asks you to use the most current version.
- Blocks 1 to 7 are already filled in for real estate. They include the ORI (agency) number NJ920510Z, the statute 45:15-9 and the $66.05 fee. The service code printed on the form is 2F1FTK; have it handy when you book.
- Blocks 9 to 26 are yours: name, date of birth, physical description, place of birth, citizenship, home address, occupation and employer. Your Social Security number is marked optional.
- The form says blocks 1 through 26 must be complete before you schedule, online or by phone.
- Do not alter, share or reuse the form. It says so in capital letters.
- Keep a copy. You need the form at the appointment and a copy for your license application.
Step 2: Book and pay IDEMIA
- Go to uenroll.identogo.com, which is open 24 hours a day, or call 1-877-503-5981, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon. English and Spanish operators are available. Hearing impaired callers can use 1-800-673-0353.
- Pick a scan center and a time. The Commission says appointments are generally available within 7 to 10 days of scheduling.
- Pay the $66.05 processing fee to IDEMIA when you book. It takes Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, prepaid debit cards and ACH debit from a checking account.
- Write down your appointment date, time and site, and put the cancel cutoff in your calendar (see the fee section below).
The $66.05 goes to IDEMIA, not to PSI or the Commission. It is separate from the $160 license application fee your broker pays when filing. For every fee from course to license, see what an NJ license costs.
Quick check
Saves to your topic scoreA New Jersey salesperson candidate has just passed the PSI exam and books a Live Scan appointment online. Which statement about the fingerprinting fee is correct?
Reveal answer (review only)
Answer: The answer is C, The candidate pays IDEMIA $66.05 when scheduling the appointment.
The Commission's fingerprinting page says the $66.05 processing fee is paid directly to IDEMIA at the time of scheduling. It is separate from the exam fee and the license fee.
Why the other answers do not fit
- A. The candidate pays PSI $38 at the scan center
- $38 is the PSI exam fee. PSI has no part in fingerprinting.
- B. The fee is added to the $160 license application paid by the broker
- The $160 license fee is a separate payment to the state; fingerprinting is paid to IDEMIA.
- D. The Real Estate Commission bills the candidate after the results clear
- The Commission does not bill for fingerprinting. Payment is due to IDEMIA when you book.
Remember: Fingerprints: $66.05 to IDEMIA, paid when you book.

What to bring to the appointment
Two things: the completed Universal Form and one acceptable photo ID. The ID rule is strict. A single, current (not expired) document has to show all of it: your photo, your name, an address and your date of birth. The Commission's page describes the address as home or employer; the form says home or issuing agency. The ID has to be issued by a federal, state, county or municipal government. Combinations of documents are not accepted, and without acceptable ID you will not be fingerprinted.
| What you bring | Accepted? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| NJ MVC or other state photo driver's license or state ID | Yes | Government issued, with photo, name, address and date of birth on one card. The Commission names it as an example. |
| Passport | Yes | The Commission lists a passport as its second example of acceptable ID. |
| An expired driver's license | No | The form says the single document must be current, not expired. |
| Social Security card plus a utility bill | No | A combination of documents is not accepted, and neither has a photo. |
| Work badge or private school student ID | No | Not issued by a government entity. |
| No completed Universal Form IDG_NJAPP_051719_V1 | No | The form says you are treated as unable to be fingerprinted and charged $12.80. |
The fee, the $12.80 trap and refunds
| Charge | Amount | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Live Scan processing fee | $66.05, paid to IDEMIA | At booking |
| Appointment fee | $12 plus tax ($12.80), paid to IDEMIA | You cancel or reschedule after 5 p.m. Eastern the business day before (after Saturday noon for a Monday slot), you do not show up, or you are turned away for ID, form or mismatch problems |
| Refunds | Handled by IDEMIA | The Commission's page says all refunds are issued by IDEMIA |
This $12.80 is IDEMIA's fee. It has nothing to do with PSI, whose late cancellation and no-show penalty is losing your $38 exam fee. The Commission does not publish a refund policy for the $66.05 itself, so if you need money back, ask IDEMIA.
Quick check
Saves to your topic scoreA candidate has an IdentoGO fingerprint appointment at 9 a.m. on a Monday. What is the latest time to cancel or reschedule without the $12.80 appointment fee?
Reveal answer (review only)
Answer: The answer is A, Saturday at noon.
The cutoff is 5 p.m. Eastern the business day before, but for Monday appointments the Commission sets it at Saturday noon.
Why the other answers do not fit
- B. Friday at 5 p.m. Eastern
- Friday at 5 p.m. would be safe, but it is not the latest allowed time; the Monday rule runs to Saturday noon.
- C. Sunday at 5 p.m. Eastern
- Sunday is past the Saturday noon cutoff for a Monday appointment.
- D. Monday at 8 a.m., one hour before the appointment
- There is no same-day cancellation window; canceling Monday morning triggers the fee.
Remember: Monday appointment? Cancel by Saturday noon.

After the appointment: the proof your broker needs
The Commission says an application needs three things together: a fully completed application, the license fee and proof of fingerprinting. Without all three it is not accepted. Proof of fingerprinting is a copy of your completed Universal Form plus the payment receipt IDEMIA gives you at the scan. Hand both to your sponsoring broker, along with the Applicant ID from your score report, so they can file. The full order of steps is in what to do after you pass, and the exam guide covers the application itself.
You do not get your results, and the Commission's page does not say how long the check takes. What it does say, in its online application FAQ for brokers, is that a candidate stays in pending status until everything submitted is reviewed and fingerprint results are cleared. You cannot work until the Commission approves you.
Quick check
Saves to your topic scoreWhat does the Real Estate Commission accept as proof of fingerprinting with an initial salesperson license application?
Reveal answer (review only)
Answer: The answer is D, A copy of the completed Universal Form and the IDEMIA payment receipt from the scan.
The Commission says proof of fingerprinting is a copy of the completed Universal Form plus the IDEMIA payment receipt issued at the scan, and an application without it is not accepted.
Why the other answers do not fit
- A. The passing score report from PSI
- The score report proves you passed the exam, not that you were fingerprinted.
- B. A results letter from the New Jersey State Police
- Candidates do not receive a results letter; the application stays pending until the results clear.
- C. Fingerprint results from a background check done for a previous job
- Prints taken for another purpose cannot be reused for a real estate license.
Remember: Proof = Universal Form copy + IDEMIA receipt.

When something goes wrong
| Situation | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Marcus has a Monday 10 a.m. slot and cancels Sunday night | Past the Saturday noon cutoff, so IDEMIA charges $12.80 | Rebook right away; the next slot may be 7 to 10 days out |
| Priya booked as "Priya Shah" but wrote "Priya R. Shah-Rao" on the form | The form must exactly match the booking, so she can be turned away with the $12.80 fee | Fill in a fresh form that matches, or correct the booking before the day |
| Ken was fingerprinted in NJ last year for a school job | Those prints cannot be reused; criminal history can only be used for the purpose it was collected for | Book a new real estate Live Scan |
| Ana lives in Ohio and does not work or study in NJ | She is not within ten miles of the border, so the standard in-person rule does not fit her | Contact the Licensing Services Bureau at 609-292-7272 or relic@dobi.nj.gov for instructions before booking |
| Lee lives in Pennsylvania but works in Newark | Anyone who lives, works or goes to school in NJ must be printed in person at an IDEMIA site | Book a New Jersey IdentoGO location |
Two problems the Commission does not cover on its page: prints that come back unreadable, and how you would be told. We could not find a published process for either. If your broker hears nothing for a long time, or anything suggests your prints need to be redone, call the Licensing Services Bureau at 609-292-7272. If the FBI check shows a record you believe is wrong, the Commission points to the federal procedure in 28 CFR 16.34 for correcting or updating an FBI identification record.

FAQ
How much does fingerprinting cost for a NJ real estate license?
$66.05, paid to IDEMIA (IdentoGO) when you book. A separate $12.80 appointment fee applies only if you cancel late, miss the appointment or are turned away.
When should I get fingerprinted for my NJ real estate license?
Immediately after you pass the PSI exam, according to the Real Estate Commission. Your application cannot be accepted without proof of fingerprinting, and it still has to be filed within one year of finishing your course.
What is the IdentoGO service code for NJ real estate?
The salesperson and broker Universal Form (IDG_NJAPP_051719_V1) prints the service code 2F1FTK. Download the current form from the Commission's fingerprinting page and fill it in before you book.
What ID do I need for NJ real estate fingerprinting?
One current, government issued photo ID that shows your name, address and date of birth on the same document, such as a state driver's license or a passport, which the Commission lists as examples. Combinations of documents are not accepted.
Can I use fingerprints from another job or license?
No. The Commission says fingerprints taken in New Jersey for another purpose cannot be reused, because criminal history information may only be used for the purpose it was collected for.
How do I cancel an IdentoGO appointment without a fee?
Cancel or reschedule by 5 p.m. Eastern the business day before your appointment, or by Saturday at noon for a Monday appointment. After that IDEMIA charges $12 plus tax ($12.80).
What proof of fingerprinting goes with my license application?
A copy of your completed Universal Form and the payment receipt IDEMIA gives you at the scan. Give both to your sponsoring broker, who files the application.
Can I get fingerprinted outside New Jersey?
If you live, work or go to school in New Jersey, you must be printed in person at an IDEMIA site. If none of those apply and you are not within ten miles of a New Jersey border, contact the Licensing Services Bureau at 609-292-7272 or relic@dobi.nj.gov.
How long do fingerprint results take?
The Commission does not publish a time. Its broker FAQ says your application stays pending until it is reviewed and your fingerprint results clear.
