The short version: finish a 75-hour course, and your school sends your eligibility to PSI. Book the $38 exam at a test center or online. You get 4 hours for 110 scored questions, about 80 on national principles and 30 on New Jersey law, and you need 77 right (70%). Then you get fingerprinted, join a broker and apply, all within one year of completing your prelicensing course.
Your license roadmap
You must be at least 18, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and meet the Commission's character standard. New Jersey has no reciprocity, so agents licensed in other states follow the same six steps.

Your eligibility expires one year after course completion. Passing, and every retake, has to happen before then, and so does your license application. Put the date in your calendar today.

What changed recently
If your course book is a few years old, these are the updates it may be missing. The big one is agency: older material says the Consumer Information Statement has four relationships. It has had five since August 2024. Learn the current version, and know the old wording so a dated question does not throw you.

New agency law, P.L. 2024, c.32
The Consumer Information Statement now lists five relationships, adding designated agent. Residential deals need a written brokerage services agreement that says compensation is fully negotiable. Public open houses need a sign saying the host firm represents the seller. Read more

No format change: still 110 questions, 4 hours, 70% to pass and $38. The outline below is from this edition.
Booking, ID and where you test
Once your school sends your eligibility to PSI, book online at test-takers.psiexams.com/njre or call (855) 579-4634 (weekdays 7:30am to 10pm, weekends 9am to 5:30pm Eastern; phone booking needs a card). Your first and last name in PSI must match your ID exactly.
- Arrive 30 minutes early. If you are late, you lose the seat and the fee.
- Scratch paper and a pencil are provided.
- Phones, watches and calculators are not allowed in the testing room.
- Run PSI's compatibility check first.
- Private room, webcam, clear desk. No breaks and no scratch paper.
- Starting more than 15 minutes late forfeits the fee.
- ID
- One current government ID with photo, name and signature: driver's license, state ID, passport or military ID. Temporary IDs are refused.
- Cancel or reschedule
- At least 2 days ahead, online or with a live agent. A voicemail does not count, and the $38 is not refunded otherwise.
- Name changed?
- Bring proof, like a marriage certificate or divorce decree, if your ID and registration differ.
- Accommodations
- Request them through PSI before you book.
Scoring and retakes
77/110
One combined score, so a strong national section can carry a weaker state one. Your result shows on screen when you finish and the score report is emailed. The 5 to 10 pretest questions do not count, but you cannot tell which they are.
Next day
The earliest you can book a retake. There is no other waiting period. Fail on a Wednesday, call Thursday, and you could sit again Friday if seats are open. Your report breaks down where you lost points. Find your weak areas
What it costs
Past the course, the state and testing fees come to $264.05 if you pass first time. Each retake adds $38.

- 4Wait for approvalComplete applications are normally processed within about 15 business days. You cannot do any real estate work until the Commission approves you.
Licenses run on two-year terms, and the current one ends June 30, 2027. You need 12 CE hours per term, 6 of them core (ethics, fair housing and agency), done by April 30, 2027 to avoid a $200 late fee. If you are first licensed on or after July 1, 2026, you are exempt this term. Terms starting July 1, 2027 require 18 hours under P.L. 2026, c.52. Renewal and CE details
