How to schedule the NJ real estate exam with PSI
Book the NJ exam with PSI online or by phone, the 2-day cancel rule that saves your $38, and what to do if PSI cannot find your eligibility.
Rules covered through . Sources and corrections.
The short version
- 1Once your school sends your eligibility to PSI after the 75-hour course, book online at test-takers.psiexams.com/njre or by phone at (855) 579-4634, choosing a test center or remote exam and paying the $38 fee.
- 2To cancel or change without losing that fee, PSI must hear from you at least 2 days before the exam (for a Monday exam, by Saturday), and a voicemail does not count.
- 3If PSI cannot find your eligibility, confirm you finished the course and picked the New Jersey salesperson exam, then contact your school, which is the one that sends the record.
Before you can book
You cannot pick a date until PSI has your eligibility. For salesperson candidates, that comes from your school, not from you and not from the Real Estate Commission. When you finish the 75-hour course, including the school's final exam, the school sends your eligibility to PSI electronically. PSI's bulletin says you will then get an email confirmation from PSI. That email is your signal that booking will work.
A few other things are worth having in hand before you sit down to book:
- Your eligibility confirmation email from PSI. If it has not arrived, see the troubleshooting section below before you call anyone.
- Your current, unexpired, government-issued photo ID with your name, photo and signature, such as a state driver's license, state ID card or US passport. Temporary IDs are not accepted. The first and last name on your PSI account must match this ID exactly.
- A payment card for the $38 exam fee. The fee is not refundable or transferable.
- An idea of when and where you want to test. The bulletin advises you not to schedule until you are familiar with the topics in the content outline.
You do not give PSI your Social Security number yourself. Your school collects it and sends it with your eligibility, and PSI says it uses it only as an identification number. Also keep the clock in mind: your eligibility expires one year to the day from when it is issued, and every attempt has to fit inside that year. Our post on the one-year deadline shows how to plan around it.

How to book online, step by step
These are the steps as PSI's bulletin (updated February 1, 2026) describes them. Button names on the live site can shift a little, but the order holds.
- Go to test-takers.psiexams.com/njre. This is PSI's New Jersey real estate page. We suggest starting here rather than from PSI's general site, which makes it easier to land on another state's exam.
- Select TESTS to create an account, then choose the exam and select LOGIN/REGISTER. The New Jersey program has salesperson, broker and instructor exams; pick salesperson.
- Create your account. Type your first and last name exactly as they appear on the ID you will bring on test day.
- Choose how you want to test: Test Center or Remote Proctored.
- For a test center, enter a city or postal code and select FIND. For remote, go straight to the calendar.
- Pick a date and time, then pay the $38 fee.
- Review the booking before you confirm. For remote exams the bulletin specifically tells you to review it before selecting CONFIRM.
- Our suggestion: save or screenshot your booking details after you pay. If you cannot see the appointment in your account, call PSI before assuming you are booked.
How to book by phone
If you would rather talk to a person, call PSI at (855) 579-4634. Registrars take calls Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Eastern Time. To book by phone you need a valid VISA, MasterCard, American Express or Discover card. The bulletin lists those cards for phone bookings only; it does not list the payment methods for online booking.
Phone booking helps most when something on the website does not look right, for example when your eligibility does not show up or the name on your record looks wrong. The registrar can see what PSI has on file.
Test center or remote: what changes
You choose the format during booking, and it changes your test day more than you might expect. The exam itself, 110 questions in four hours, is the same either way.
| Test center | Remote proctored | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Nine PSI sites in New Jersey (Brick, Hamilton Square area, Marlton, New Providence, North Brunswick, Northfield area in Linwood, Parsippany, Rochelle Park, Secaucus) and centers in many other states | Your own computer, with a webcam placed so the proctor can see you and sufficient internet service |
| Arrival | Arrive 30 minutes early. Late arrivals may be turned away and lose the fee | You can launch within 30 minutes of your booked time. Not starting within 15 minutes after it forfeits the fee |
| Scratch paper | Provided, with a pencil | Not allowed |
| Breaks | You may leave the room only for the restroom, with the proctor's permission, and you get no extra time | Not allowed. PSI says that if you cannot finish without a break, do not register for remote |
| Before test day | Plan the route and parking. Companions, including drivers, may not wait in the center, the building or on its property | Run PSI's computer compatibility check, including audio, video, webcam and system checks |
Our view: if you rely on scratch paper for math or know you will need a break in four hours, a test center is the safer pick. Our online vs test center comparison goes deeper on the trade-offs. Either way, read the exam day guide before your date.
Rescheduling and cancelling: the 2-day rule
PSI's rule is short. To cancel without losing your fee, PSI must receive the cancellation at least 2 days before your exam date, made online or by phone. A voicemail does not count. The bulletin's example: for a Monday exam, cancel on or before the previous Saturday. That is calendar days, so weekends count.
The bulletin does not set a separate rescheduling deadline or a rescheduling fee, and it does not say how to switch between a test center and remote after booking. Our suggestion is to treat any change, including a format switch, like a cancellation: make it at least 2 days ahead, online or by phone with a live registrar, and make sure you see the new booking before you hang up or close the page.
You lose the $38 fee, and your registration becomes invalid, if any of these happen:
- You cancel less than 2 days before the exam, or not at all.
- You do not show up.
- You arrive after the exam start time (test center), or do not start within 15 minutes after your booked time (remote).
- You do not bring proper identification.
Then you book again and pay another $38. If PSI closes a site because of severe weather or another emergency, the bulletin says your exam will be rescheduled, and PSI will make every effort to find a convenient time as soon as possible. PSI will try to contact you, and you can check your status at (855) 579-4634 or on the PSI website. The cost breakdown shows how forfeited fees add up.
Quick check
Saves to your topic scoreA candidate is booked for the PSI New Jersey salesperson exam on a Monday. Under PSI's bulletin, what is the latest day PSI can receive a cancellation without the candidate forfeiting the $38 fee?
Reveal answer (review only)
Answer: The answer is C, The previous Saturday.
PSI must receive a cancellation at least 2 days before the exam date. The bulletin's own example is that a Monday exam must be cancelled on or before the previous Saturday.
Why the other answers do not fit
- A. The previous Thursday
- Thursday is earlier than needed; Saturday still works.
- B. The previous Friday, by 5 p.m.
- Friday would work, but it is not the latest day, and the 5 p.m. cutoff is IDEMIA's fingerprint rule, not PSI's.
- D. Sunday, the day before the exam
- Sunday is only 1 day before, so the fee would be forfeited.
Remember: Two calendar days: Monday exam, cancel by Saturday.

Quick check
Saves to your topic scoreWhich of these would cause a New Jersey salesperson candidate to forfeit the PSI exam fee?
Reveal answer (review only)
Answer: The answer is B, Arriving at the test center after the exam start time.
PSI's bulletin lists arriving after the exam start time as a forfeit, along with cancelling less than 2 days ahead, not showing up and lacking proper ID.
Why the other answers do not fit
- A. Cancelling online 4 days before the exam
- Four days ahead meets the 2-day cancellation rule.
- C. Calling PSI's registrar line 3 days before to cancel
- A live phone cancellation 3 days ahead is valid; only voicemail cancellations are refused.
- D. Choosing a test center in another state
- PSI offers test centers across the United States, so testing out of state is allowed.
Remember: Late, absent, no ID or under 2 days' notice: the $38 is gone.

Troubleshooting: eligibility not found, name mismatch, wrong exam
Most booking problems come from a record that does not match, or does not exist yet on PSI's side. We cannot see your record, so we will not guess at the cause. Work through these steps in order.
If PSI cannot find your eligibility:
- Confirm you have finished everything your school requires, including its final exam. The bulletin says education must be completed before you call PSI for a reservation.
- Check for PSI's eligibility confirmation email, including spam and promotions folders.
- Make sure you are on the New Jersey real estate page (test-takers.psiexams.com/njre) and that you picked the salesperson exam, not broker or instructor.
- Contact your school. PSI's bulletin says that if PSI does not have your record, salesperson candidates should contact their education provider. Broker candidates contact the Commission.
- Once the school confirms it has sent your eligibility, call PSI at (855) 579-4634 if the website still does not show it.
If your name does not match:
- Compare three things: the name your school has, the name on your PSI account and the name on your ID. PSI requires your first and last name to match your ID exactly.
- If your school's record is wrong, ask the school to correct it. The school is the one that sends your details to PSI.
- If your PSI account is wrong, call PSI rather than creating a second account. (Our suggestion; a duplicate account can make the problem harder to trace.)
- If you changed your legal name, bring official documentation of the change to the exam, such as a marriage license or divorce decree. PSI's bulletin requires it.
If you booked the wrong exam, or another state's exam: call PSI right away and ask what can be done. Registration fees are not refundable or transferable, so the cheapest fix is catching it before you pay. Check the exam name on the screen before you confirm.
Quick check
Saves to your topic scoreA salesperson candidate finished the 75-hour course, but PSI's website says it has no eligibility record for her. According to PSI's bulletin, who should she contact?
Reveal answer (review only)
Answer: The answer is D, Her education provider.
For salesperson candidates, the school sends eligibility to PSI. The bulletin says that if PSI does not have your record, contact your education provider.
Why the other answers do not fit
- A. The Real Estate Commission
- The Commission handles broker eligibility, not salesperson eligibility.
- B. Her sponsoring broker
- A broker sponsors your license application later; it does not send exam eligibility.
- C. IDEMIA (IdentoGO)
- IDEMIA handles fingerprinting after you pass, not exam eligibility.
Remember: Salesperson eligibility missing? Call your school first.

Two candidates, two booking weeks
| Candidate | What happened | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Dana | Finished her course and its final exam on a Tuesday, got PSI's confirmation email two days later, booked a Saturday morning test center slot online. Her sister's wedding moved, so she cancelled online the Wednesday before. | Cancelled more than 2 days ahead, so no fee lost. She booked a new date the same day. |
| Marcus | Booked a remote exam for Monday at 9 a.m. On Sunday he realized he had a work shift. He left a voicemail with PSI that night. | Voicemail does not count, and Sunday was already too late. He lost the $38 and had to book and pay again. |
After you book
Put the date, time and format in your calendar, and note the cancellation cutoff two days before it. Then spend the time where it pays: a practice exam on fresh questions shows which topics still cost you points, and the exam day guide covers what to bring. If you are booking a retake, remember you cannot book it on the same day as the attempt you failed.

How do I schedule the NJ real estate exam?
After your school sends your eligibility to PSI, create an account at test-takers.psiexams.com/njre, choose the salesperson exam, pick test center or remote, choose a date and pay $38. You can also book by phone at (855) 579-4634.
Can I schedule the NJ real estate exam before finishing my course?
No. PSI's bulletin says your education must be completed first, and your school sends your eligibility to PSI after you finish the course.
Why can't PSI find my eligibility?
PSI's bulletin tells salesperson candidates to contact their education provider if PSI does not have their record. Check first that you finished the school's final exam and that you chose the New Jersey salesperson exam.
How late can I cancel my PSI exam without losing the fee?
PSI must receive your cancellation at least 2 days before the exam date, online or by phone. For a Monday exam, that means by the previous Saturday. Voicemails are not accepted.
Is there a fee to reschedule the NJ real estate exam?
PSI's bulletin lists no rescheduling fee. If you cancel late, miss the exam, arrive late or lack proper ID, you forfeit the $38 fee and pay again to rebook.
What is the $12.80 fee for the NJ real estate license?
It is an IDEMIA (IdentoGO) fingerprint appointment fee of $12 plus tax, charged for late cancellation of a fingerprint appointment or being turned away without proper ID or the current form. It is not a PSI exam fee.

Can I take the NJ real estate exam outside New Jersey?
Yes. PSI's bulletin says it has test centers in many regions across the United States, and you can also choose a remote proctored exam.
